25TH ANNUAL GIFT OF PRODUCE HOLIDAY EVENT
TO BENEFIT HOUSTON FOOD BANK
WHO: Houston Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association
WHAT: 25th Annual Gift of Produce Holiday Event benefitting Houston Food Bank. This year, 2.5 million pounds of fresh produce will be donated to Houston Food Bank for distribution to the holiday tables of those in need through a network of more than 500 food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and other agencies in 18 southeast Texas counties. This event is the world’s largest single donation of fresh produce Since 1986, the Gift of Produce has donated more than 20 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables for hunger relief.

WHEN: Friday, December 16, 2011 – 10AM.
WHY: The need is great. Nearly 900,000 individuals in and near the Houston communityneed help with food each year. Many have to make tough choices between food and other essentials such as housing, utilities or medical care. Relying heavily on programs like the Gift of Produce for food donations, Houston Food Bank feeds 137,000 hungry people each week, serving more than 50 million meals each year.
HFFVA is a non-profit 501(c)(5) organization dedicated to building consumption offruits and vegetables in the Houston Metropolitan Area through programs like Gift of Produce and Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools, initiated by First Lady Michelle Obama in an effort to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity.
